COVID-19 timeline: from an unexplained pneumonia cluster to living with the virus
A concise timeline from late 2019, through the pandemic declaration and vaccine rollout, to the end of the global emergency status in 2023.
From late 2019 to a global emergency
WHO was informed of a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan on 31 December 2019. The viral genome was shared in January 2020, allowing tests to be developed. Thailand confirmed the first case outside China on 13 January 2020. WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January and characterised COVID-19 as a pandemic on 11 March 2020.
Vaccines, variants and adaptation
Vaccines first became available in late 2020. Variants including Alpha, Delta and Omicron changed transmission patterns and health-system pressure. Vaccination, prior infection and access to care reduced severe outcomes in many settings, but the virus continued to circulate.
The emergency ended, not the disease
On 5 May 2023 WHO ended the global emergency status. COVID-19 still causes illness, deaths and post-COVID conditions, so surveillance, vaccination, access to treatment and clear public communication remain important.
