Symptoms and testing

COVID-19, flu and the common cold: what is different?

Reviewed Aug 28, 2026 · 1 min read

Respiratory symptoms overlap heavily. Symptoms alone cannot reliably distinguish COVID-19, influenza and a common cold.

Overlapping symptoms

Cough, sore throat, fever, runny nose, fatigue and body aches can occur with many respiratory infections. Severity and symptom order vary, especially after vaccination or previous infection.

What helps assessment

Consider exposure, symptom timing, local circulation, age and underlying conditions. Timely assessment matters for people at higher risk because some treatments have an early treatment window.

When to test or seek care

Consider testing after close exposure, before contact with vulnerable people or when you are at higher risk. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, dehydration or rapid worsening.
